| Another test of driving ability, the tee shot on the 9th
plays slightly uphill, and often into the wind.
The valley in which the 8th green sits cuts diagonally across the
fairway at the beginning of the landing area, creating a steep rise
which must be carried to leave a reasonable second shot. Trees are
in play on both sides, and the ideal tee shot is hit at the left
edge of the fairway as it rises over the top of the ridge. As the
open has approached, the fairway has been narrowed, although this
is not obvious from the tee.
Over the rise, the hole bends gently left and the trees continue to hug the left side
of the fairway. The green sits in a ring of trees and is open at the back but surrounded
in front and on both sides by sand. The approach shot is played with a short iron, the
player's view of the bottom of a right pin obscured by the front bunker. |
