| The tee shot, again, is critical on this hole, and has to be
hit with pinpoint accuracy. Trees, rough and sand await both left and right. The fairway
in the landing area snakes around and between two fairway bunker complexes, both of which
have been re-built for the Open. Longer hitters can drive over the middle bunker to a
plateau in the fairway some 130 - 150 yards from the green, the longest aim between the
two left bunkers to reach the end of the plateau.
Choosing that line can gain up to 50 yards at the risk of leaving
a steep downhill lie for the short iron approach shot, but now that
the bunker on the left has been extended and the face raised, only
the very longest will be able to make that carry.
The approach shot plays downhill from the elevated fairway to a
fairly flat, raised green, surrounded by a vast expanse of sand.
However, a very long hitter can fly it down the hill and have a
lob wedge to a flat green for an easy birdie.
