1999 Summary

The Nassau Players Club organizes several tournaments each year for the benefit of its members.

1999 opened with the Spring Scramble.   Played on the Black Course from the White tees, the winning team was Doug Jaeckel and Kevin Wohleking.  Playing early, Doug and Kevin posted a fine 3-under-par 68 before a lot of the teams had started play, and they watched their lead hold up all day as team after team was unable to overcome the strong winds.  One stroke behind was the team of Mike Brown and Mitch Gelman.

The second event was the MGA Net Team Qualifier.  Played on the Red Course, the winning team was Larry Contillo (who represented the club in 1998) and Mike O'Grady, winning a match of cards over Frank Scallie and Ernie Bodo.

Over the weekend of May 15-16, NPC members played one round on the Red Course (from the White tees) to compete for three places in a foursome which will play with former Bethpage Pro Shop pro Jeff Lollo in the LIGA Open Pro-Am on the Red Course on Tuesday, June 8.  Two of the places in the foursome were filled by the two lowest gross scores: Pete Gadigian's 73 and Dave Segot's 75.  The third spot went to the lowest net score: Paul Joyce had an 80 with 12 shots, for 68 net.

Saturday, May 22 was the Jack Burger Memorial Pinehurst, played on the Green Course.  The team of Bill Geiger and Glenn Broderick practically ran away from the field, winning by a three-shot margin over the team of Ray Eklund and Al Channin, who took second place on a match of cards from Al Jinete and Russ Demeri.

In June and July, we held the Club Championship. Congratulations to Sean McGowan, 1999 Club Champion.  Pete Flynn put up a good fight in the final round, with Sean finally winning on the very last hole.   Congratulations also to the "A" Flight winner (Mike O'Grady), the "B" Flight winner (Tom Regan), and the "C" Flight winner (Charles Sullivan).  Surprisingly, none of the #1 qualifiers won their flight; in fact, in three of the four flights the #1 qualifier lost in the first round of match play.   Review the Qualifying Rounds and Conditions and see the 1999 Club Champions' photo.

Over the nine day period beginning September 4 and ending September 12, we held the seventh annual NPC Classic, with one round on the Black Course (White Tees) and one round on the Red Course (Blue Tees).   Mike Brown defeated Bill Bartell by one shot and Jerry Shulock by two in the Gross competition, while Tom Sattler and Gary Mertens played to a tie in the Net competition.

The final official event of the century was the 1999 Fall Scramble.  Played from the Championship Tees on the Black Course, the team of Sean Hartman, Mike Pomponio, Tom Regan, and Cono Mea birdied the 18th hole to win by a single stroke over the team of Matt Esposito, Mike O'Grady, Tom Mullaly, and Mike Finnegan.  The Esposito team took second on a match of cards over the team of Mike Brown, John Kothe, John Hennessey, and Brendan McManamin.  The Scrambe was really a close, competitive event in 1999, with six teams finishing within two strokes.  Review the conditions here.
