The Year In Brief
1998 opened with the Spring Scramble.
Played on the Red course from the Blue tees this
year, due to the continuing closure of the Black
course, the wining team was Sean Hartman, Gary
Thorsen, Dan Richards, and Ray Reynolds, narrowly
beating Bill Bartell's three man team, with a
fine score of 58.
Second event of the year was the MGA Net Team
Championship qualifying round, also played on
the Red course, won on a card play-off over the
last 3 holes by the team of Larry Contillo and
Mike Finnegan with a score of 63, from Ernie Bodo
and Danny Richards.
The NPC
Pinehurst was played on June 6th
on the Green course, and was won by two of our
new members, Steve McCarthy and Tom Sattler, with
a level par 71 for a net 65. In second place,
just one shot behind was the team of Gary Thorsen
and Tom Regan.
The NPC
Club Championship finals were played on
Sunday, August 16th. In a hard-fought
final of the championship flight, John Booth
managed to defeat Peter Flynn at the 21st
hole after a tie in regulation play. Al Channin
completed a successful defense of his 'A' flight
title from last year with a 4 & 3 win over
Mike Birmingham. The 'B' flight was won by Henry
Roed, who managed to stave off Ernie Bodo's
valiant efforts at the 17th hole with a 2 & 1
margin, and the 'C' flight was won by Terry Small
with a rather one-sided 8 & 7 defeat of Sean
Von Braunsberg.
The 6th
Annual NPC Classic was played over the Red
and Black courses between September 5th
and September 20th. The gross prize
was won by Mike Brown with a combined score of
142 including a fine 68 on the Red course. Second
place on a card play-off was taken by Adi Sutarno
from Jerry Shulock with matching scores of 145.
The net prize went to Mike "Mickey-O"
O'Grady with an amazing net score of 139. Close
behind were Greg Kryjak with 141 and Pete
Gadigian with 143.
Finally, the Fall Scramble
completed the year on October 4th.
Returning to its rightful home, on the Black
course, the year ended with a triumph for the
team of Pete Flynn, Zoran Pirjevic, Marc
Frascogna, and Doug Smolensky who finished the
day as winners with a 9 under par score of 62.
